Ketamine for Depression

Fast, Ongoing Relief For Depression

Charleston Ketamine Center provides ketamine infusion therapy for individuals living with major depressive disorder. This includes those who have tried multiple antidepressants, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes with little or no improvement. Ketamine is changing the landscape of mental health treatment. It works differently from traditional antidepressants. There is evidence that ketamine, at least temporarily, causes structural changes in the brain’s default mode network (DMN). According to Wikipedia, the DMN is best known for being active when a person is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest, such as during daydreaming and mind-wandering. It can also be active during detailed thoughts related to external task performance. Other times that the DMN is active include when the individual is thinking about others, thinking about themselves, remembering the past, and planning for the future. The DMN creates a coherent “internal narrative” central to the construction of a sense of self. Patients often begin to feel relief within a few days of their first treatment.

Our Treatment Protocol

Ketamine is administered through a series of six one-hour intravenous (IV) infusions conducted in a private, comfortable setting under direct clinical supervision. In order to get maximum benefit, we encourage patients to get these within a two-week time frame. The initial series is followed by a single booster infusion approximately two weeks later. After this time, we offer at-home ketamine lozenges to help prolong the benefits of the infusions. Most patients on lozenges also benefit from monthly maintenance infusions over the next five to six months. Beyond the first six months, the need for follow-up infusions varies widely from one patient to another.

Our team carefully evaluates each patient’s medical history, current symptoms, and previous treatment experiences. We then adjust the protocol based on how they respond in order to create a truly personalized plan, ensuring they receive the maximum benefit and ongoing positive results from this breakthrough therapy.

Cost and Financing

For new patients that are able to complete all six infusions within the two-week timeframe, the sixth infusion is free.  If, a week after the sixth infusion, a patient does not feel they had a positive response we will refund the cost of the fifth infusion as well.  Depression infusions are $400 per session. Flexible financing is available through Advance Care and CareCredit.
